Following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, The Scout's panel of Fantasy Premier League experts discuss the main lessons they have learned.

Az Phillips (@FPLBlackbox_Az)

It's been another quite disappointing season, and it's the same lesson. I've tried too hard to be different, and been too slow to bring in "sensible" picks that play 90 minutes and are scoring points, just because I'm always looking for the flashy "next big thing". Being too slow on Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, Bryan Mbeumo and Jarrod Bowen has cost me this season.

Oscar (@FPLFocal)

My biggest takeaway this season is to pick nailed players that are generally good for 90 minutes.

I intentionally ignored players that rose in popularity at certain points, such as Cody Gakpo. Players who are secure starters won't become a headache later, and they're also likelier to get you an attacking return the longer they're on the pitch! I'll be taking that approach into future seasons.

Nick Harris (@WGTA_Nick

My lesson learned is don't be afraid to Wildcard early if things aren't working out for you. I Wildcarded in Gameweek 3, which is the earliest I've ever used it, to tear apart my awful Gameweek 1 team - but this ended up being huge for me as I was able to jump on multiple differentials early, such as Luis Diaz, Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer.

Sam Bonfield (@FPLFamily)

There is a balance to be struck in FPL between targeting players who have Double Gameweeks or good fixtures and getting players who are in good form. This season there were a number of moments, especially with the likes of Daniel Munoz, where I didn't prioritise getting him despite really wanting to. This was because my focus was on targeting form and fixtures elsewhere in the build-up to the Doubles, and because he had a Blank Gameweek.

Next season, I am going to try and be more aware of not overthinking those decision, instead going with a player who is in form even if it means an extra transfer a few weeks down the line.

Pranil Sheth (@Lateriser12)

Go with what you know at the start of the season and avoid teams that have had many changes. A steady start goes a long way in making sure you don't get too "creative" at the start of the season.

Harry Daniels (@FPLHarry

My big lesson is that now, with the ability to roll up to five transfers, fewer managers are taking hits each week. This means that if you do take one, it sets you back considerably in that week compared to previous seasons, so hits have to be even more worth it to consider them going forward.

Pras (@Pras_FPL)

My biggest takeaway was to be more patient. The five free transfers can be quite powerful for weeks with surprises, like when the Double Gameweek was announced in Gameweek 24. I will strive to make good long-term picks.

Utkarsh Dalmia (@ZopharFPL)

It's a long season, so don't be disappointed by your rank in Gameweek 20 and start doing risky moves to chase. You can still make up ground by making sensible picks, so don't go different for the sake of it too early.

Gianni Buttice (@GianniButtice)

My main lesson learned is adapting to the new rule of being able to roll up to five transfers and keeping them after using chips. I didn't do this enough this season and was forced to take more hits than I planned because I often didn't have enough transfers banked.

Next season, I will avoid short-term punts and view all transfers with a longer game plan in mind.

Lee Bonfield (@FPLFamily)

Playing the long game has always worked for me, so this season I tried to play a little more week-to-week. It worked for the most part, with a number of hits paying off, as I played the week in front of me. The challenge for next season is going to be finding the right balance of both approaches.
