Premier League fans will be hoping that 2017/18 can pick up where 2016/17 left off in terms of goals scored when the new season’s fixture list is released on Wednesday.

A mammoth 37 goals were scored on the final day of 2016/17, the most in a final matchweek of a 20-team season.

It was a fitting end to a season that fell just two goals short of the highest-scoring 380-match campaign, 2011/12’s 1,066 goals.

If the number of goals on the opening weekend of the new season matches that of the final round of fixtures in 2016/17 it will mark a record.

The most scored in an opening matchweek is 36, set in 2003/04. Last season 28 goals were netted in comparison.

Liverpool's 4-3 win at Arsenal last season was a joint-record for goals scored in a MW1 fixture

This was despite the first round featuring a match which equalled the record for the most goals on the opening weekend.

Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Arsenal at Emirates Stadium was the fifth time that seven goals had been scored in a Matchweek 1 fixture, with each occasion an away win.

Highest-scoring opening-day matches

Crystal Palace 1-6 Liverpool, 1994/95
Sheffield Wednesday 3-4 Tottenham Hotspur, 1994/95
Southampton 3-4 Nottingham Forest, 1995/96
Everton 1-6 Arsenal, 2009/10
Arsenal 3-4 Liverpool, 2016/17
