Tom “Hashtag Tom” Leese was a shock winner of last year’s ePremier League competition, claiming his first major esports trophy.

And for those looking to follow in his footsteps ahead of the start of qualifying for this season's EA SPORTS FIFA 21 tournament, he has shared the secrets that have helped him to success.

Registration is open for ePremier League, which offers UK residents aged 16 or over a share of £40,000 prize money in the finals in March.

And Hashtag Tom says players will improve just by taking part, even if they do not make the cut this time.

Learn from defeats

"My top tips for people looking to improve at FIFA would be to watch gameplay, to watch other people play and see what they are doing in their game that you might not be adding in yet,” he says.

“Definitely to play against people that are better than you. You might have to take a few losses on the way but you will only improve by losing.

"If you win every game, you are probably not going to get much better.”

'You'll basically be unstoppable'

Hashtag Tom also offers his advice on where players should focus their practice in the latest edition of the EA SPORTS game, to improve their chances of qualification or just beating their friends.

"My tips for FIFA 21 would be utilising through-balls," he says. "There are a lot of through-balls that work well in this game.

"Get used to finishing chances. There are so many ways of finishing chances in FIFA 21. The shot variation is very, very good.

"So keep practising around the box because if you manage to master all the angles, you’ll basically be unstoppable.”
