Tom Allan scored a brace as Newcastle United kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Premier League International Cup by beating Hertha Berlin 3-1.

The Magpies had a two-goal half-time lead at Whitley Park. Victor Fernandez opened the scoring and Allan converted a penalty won by Rosaire Longelo.

The German side made it a nervy finish when Jessic Ngankam netted on 82 minutes.

But Allan sealed victory with his ninth goal of the season in all competitions, converting another spot-kick after substitute Adam Wilson had been fouled.

The win lifts Newcastle above Hertha Berlin to second place in Group C and means they can progress to the last eight if they beat bottom club Blackburn Rovers next Friday.

Derby County secured their place in the knockout stages for the first time, finishing the group stage with three wins from three after beating Southampton 3-1.

Centre-back Callum Minkley gave the Rams a half-time lead before Josh Shonibare scored for the third time in three matches and Jahmal Hector-Ingram struck his 14th goal of the season with a penalty.

Substitute Sean Brennan netted a consolation goal for Saints, who have lost all three of their Group F matches.
