Leeds United qualified for the knockout stages of Premier League Cup after topping Group H with a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United at Nethermoor Park.

Needing a win to progress to the last 16, Leeds led through Ryan Edmondson but the striker’s effort was cancelled out by Jamie Sterry before half-time.

Edmondson claimed his second after the break, with Pascal Struijk putting the game beyond the visitors, who had already qualified, on the hour.

Leeds leapfrogged Southampton to qualify, with Notts County bottom of the group.

Blackburn breeze into last 16

Ben Brereton and Joe Nuttall secured Blackburn Rovers' place in the last 16 for a third consecutive year as both scored a brace in a 5-1 win against Doncaster Rovers at The Keepmoat Stadium.

Potters overtake Sunderland 

Stoke City knocked Sunderland off the top of Group A with a 3-1 victory over them at Eppleton Colliery Welfare. 

Goals from from Jake Dunwoody, Gabriel Kyeremateng and Thibaud Verlinden sent Kevin Russell's side into the knockout stages for a fifth year in a row.

Posh fall short despite win

Also in Group A, Morgan Penfold scored twice as Peterborough United claimed a second victory of the campaign, beating Charlton Athletic 3-1 at DGS Marine Stadium.

Peterborough end their campaign in third, seven points behind Stoke, while Charlton are bottom.

Argyle comeback holds off defending champions

Plymouth Argyle finished their cup campaign on a high with a 4-1 win over holders Aston Villa at Home Park. Derby County progress as Group F winners, followed by Villa.

Forest stay unbeaten

A Joe Coveney equaliser in added time for Nottingham Forest kept their unbeaten record and denied Norwich City a first win in this campaign in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Forest had qualified as Group D winners, while Norwich had no hope of progress.
