An own goal from Thomas Holmes and a late Tyrique Bartlett strike gave Newcastle United a 2-0 away win over Reading in Division 2 at Adams Park.

But Newcastle were indebted to goalkeeper Nathan Harker for saving a late penalty that proved crucial in their victory.

Newcastle took a fortuitous lead in the 18th minute when Kelland Watts challenged Holmes and he inadvertently put the ball into his own net.

With a minute left Harker saved Josh Barrett's penalty after Mo Sangare was adjudged to have handled the ball.

Substitute Bartlett then made sure of the three points in stoppage time when he followed up a shot from Rosarie Longelo.

Three consecutive wins mean Newcastle are up to fourth place on 28 points, eight behind leaders Southampton.

Reading are a place and two points better off.
