Southampton boosted their chances of making a late push for the Division 2 play-offs with a 5-1 victory over Newcastle United.

Nathan Tella put Saints on course for a third successive PL2 win with the first-half opener at Northumberland FA.

Michael Obafemi doubled the lead early in the second half, before Alfie Jones headed in the third and Jake Hesketh quickly made it 4-0.

Josef Yarney replied for the Magpies but substitute Siphesile Mdlalose restored the visitors' four-goal advantage late on.

Saints are four points off fifth place, the final position for the promotion play-offs, with a match in hand. Newcastle drop to 11th.
