For 92-year-old Molly Garside, life can be restrictive and insular, and there is always a danger she will suffer an injury.

"I've had a few accidents, not looking after myself very well. I find that very easy, to fall over," she says.

"When you're on your own there's very little you can do when you're older. Most of the women here, they live in the flats around here and they're on their own. I've shouted about this all the time."

Molly has benefited from the Saints Foundation's Senior Saints programme, which works with isolated people over the age of 65, delivering 13 sessions each week at community venues as well as St Mary's Stadium.

She is one of 275 people who attend exercise classes that aim to improve core stability and reduce the risk of falls, organised by health and wellbeing project officers Paul Hedges and Marion Gealer.

"My doctor said it would be a good thing. That's when I phoned Paul," says Molly. "It all looks funny and we've got a very good crowd here.

"It's extremely good fun and you can really feel the impact it makes. There's nothing else much you can do, not at 92.

"You meet a lot of people, and they're friendly people. It gives me something to do two days a week.

"It makes people come out of their flats. Some that come don't even do the workouts, they just come to sit and meet people.

"Paul and Marion have helped me so much. They've helped everybody around here.

"Paul’s absolutely excellent, couldn't be better. He's good fun, he works us well. He just makes everyone laugh. I like to see people laughing."

Paul says: "We work on social isolation, just trying to get older people out of their homes and socialising with each other.

"Along with that we try to mix in some practical exercise to help with falls prevention."

The Senior Saints initiative also offers sessions that use football and sport as a vehicle to tackle early signs of dementia and memory loss - currently attended by 50 people - as well as a programme supplying a range of social and physical activities.

Molly's story is part of the Saints Together campaign, which highlights the connection between the club, the Foundation and the community.
