The Scout's panel of Fantasy Premier League experts discuss how much of your budget you should spend in defence and reveal their favoured picks.

What the FPL experts say
Sam Bonfield (@FPLFamily)

Right now it feels ideal to have a defence of Sven Botman (£4.7m), William Saliba (£5.2m) and Issa Kabore (£4.0m) for Luton Town's Double Gameweek 7. You can then sell Kabore for Dan Burn (£4.5m), Destiny Udogie (£4.8m) or Matty Cash (£4.7m). It feels key to save money to enable the likes of Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Son Heung-min (£9.2m).

As someone who recently Wildcarded, I decided to go cheap in defence, with Pervis Estupinan (£5.3m) my priciest defender, in order to afford Marcus Rashford (£8.9m), Salah, Bukayo Saka (£8.7m) and Erling Haaland (£14.1m).

If you want to go bigger in defence, you have to lose one of these premium midfielders, and with clean sheets hard to come by, I still think this is the way to go despite Kieran Trippier's (£6.6m) recent haul.

I think one premium defender, ideally Trippier, plus four cheaper options is the way to go at present. If I was Wildcarding this week, it would be Trippier, Botman, Cash, Udogie and Kabore.

There's still superb value at the back this season, so it's not necessary to go big. That said, Trippier reminded us all of what he can do with three assists last weekend.

Harry Daniels (@FPL_Harry)

There are so many good cheap defenders that you can easily have a defence with no player over £5.5m. The only premium I would consider is Trippier, but even then, Botman, Burn and Fabian Schar (£5.0m) are great cheaper alternatives.

Pras (@Pras_FPL)

Despite the Trippier masterclass last weekend, I still think the long-term play is to go cheap in defence. With so many great options under £5.5m from Arsenal, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion, there is little need to spend more.

I will aim to put as much money in midfield as possible and see what I can afford in defence.

Nick Harris (@WGTA_Nick)

You can balance a defence with some expensive picks and a few cheaper options. If I was Wildcarding now, I would get Trippier for sure, but would also have a few cheaper options such as Botman, Saliba, Estupinan and Udogie that still hold significant value.
