Wolverhampton Wanderers have appointed Gary O’Neil as their new head coach, replacing Julen Lopetegui after he left the day before.

O’Neil, who departed AFC Bournemouth earlier this summer, signs a three-year deal and becomes Wolves’ youngest-ever manager this millennium.

“We’re delighted to welcome Gary to the club," sporting director Matt Hobbs told the club's official website. "He’s a highly motivated young coach with strong principles and very well thought of by everyone he has worked with, and we’re excited to see what we can achieve together at Wolves.

“Our players have shown their quality during pre-season, and I believe Gary and his team will continue to coach and improve them and will have success working with this group.

“Everyone at Wolves is looking forward to welcoming Gary, offering him their full support and working collaboratively to help the club to keep pushing forward together.”

Success with Bournemouth

O’Neil joins Wolves after enjoying a successful season with Bournemouth in 2022/23.

He guided them to Premier League safety as they finished 15th, claiming some impressive victories along the way, such as a 1-0 win over Liverpool in March.

O'Neil was also nominated for April's Barclays Manager of the Month award, having steered Bournemouth to five wins from seven matches in that period.

He also guided the Cherries to a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest in September 2022 that won Oracle's Most Improbable Comeback award.

The 40-year-old's first match in charge of Wolves will be on Monday 14 August at Manchester United on the opening weekend of the 2023/24 Premier League season.
