Yet a combination of inconsistent form and a threat of rotation among those clubs has led a pair of FPL experts to suggest giving the captaincy to a trusted Tottenham Hotspur or Liverpool star, even though they only play once against Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United respectively.

“Given that Cristiano Ronaldo’s got that Norwich game, if you’re getting him on a Free Hit you’ve got to captain him, but I wouldn’t be moving heaven and earth to bring him in,” says Az Phillips, who is in the top 2,000 in the world rankings.

“If you haven’t got him I think going for Son Heung-min or Harry Kane is probably sensible.

“I just don’t trust Bukayo Saka. James Maddison probably misses one of Leicester’s games, as does Harvey Barnes. It’s between the Spurs guys or Mohamed Salah for me.”

Ted Wickman adds: “If I had Son, he’s the prime captain candidate. I think that Brighton fixture suits him absolutely down to the ground.

“Spurs are not a possession team, while Brighton are. They don’t do much with the ball but Spurs are specialists at counter-attacking football.”
