Everton have appointed Carlo Ancelotti as their new manager on a four-and-a-half year contract.

The Italian returns to the Premier League for the first time since being in charge of Chelsea from 2009-2011, during which time he won the 2009/10 title.

He will watch Saturday's match against Arsenal from the stands.

"This is a great club with a rich history and a very passionate fanbase," he told Everton's official website. "There is a clear vision from the owner and the board to deliver success and trophies.

“I have seen from the performances in the last two weeks that the players are capable of so much.

"The work Duncan [Ferguson] has done is a great credit to him. Strong organisation, strong discipline and the right motivation are some of the key ingredients in football and I'm pleased that he will be part of my backroom team moving forward."

Ancelotti's managerial career has included spells in charge of Juventus, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

The 60-year-old has won the UEFA Champions League three times as a manager, twice with Milan and once with Real Madrid.

His first match in the dugout will be the visit of Burnley on Boxing Day.
