David Unsworth praised his Everton Under-23 team after their 4-1 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Premier League International Cup.
A Tyias Browning own goal put Bayern ahead at Goodison but Everton pressed for an equaliser that came though Nathan Broadhead on 79 minutes.
Bayern quickly restored their lead through Marvin Cuni before Jeong Woo-yeung and Kwasi Wreidt added to it as Everton chased a second equaliser.
Unsworth felt the scoreline did not reflect the match, in which the players supported the club's #AllTogetherNow campaign.
"For the first hour or so, that’s probably the best we've played this season," the manager told Everton's official website.
"We knocked the ball around really well, we created a load of opportunities and their 'keeper's made several great saves - I lost count of how many he made.
"We got done at the end. They got two late goals when we were chasing it a little bit."
Everton stay second in Group D, behind Brighton & Hove Albion on goal difference and a point ahead of Bayern.
