With last season providing plenty of surprises and 2016/17 now just days away, we look at some of the biggest upsets of past opening days.

Leicester City 0-5 Bolton Wanderers

Newly-promoted Bolton Wanderers came into the 2001/02 season as candidates for relegation in what was just their second campaign in the Premier League.

But by half-time of their opening match at Filbert Street Sam Allardyce's side had earned themselves a comfortable 4-0 lead.

A brace from Kevin Nolan – scorer of the first goal of the PL season – as well as strikes by Michael Ricketts and Per Frandsen put Wanderers into the ascendancy.

Frandsen's second goal in the 83rd minute extended Bolton's cushion to five as Peter Taylor's side capitulated.

The hosts were ultimately unable to recover from their opening-day upset and ended the season with relegation from the Premier League, while Bolton escaped the drop via a 16th-place finish.
