Bryan Mbeumo's bid to become the Premier League's penalty king was brought to an end on Sunday after the Brentford striker's spot-kick was saved by Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Cameroon international had netted all of his previous nine penalties in the division and would therefore have felt confident of increasing his tally to 10 from 10 - or 12 from 12 in all competitions - when Kevin Schade was fouled inside the area by Fulham defender Joachim Andersen.

Mbeumo aimed the spot-kick low towards the left-hand side of the goal but Leno dived to his right and made a brilliant save, to keep the score at 1-1 in the 28th minute and end Mbeumo's perfect penalty-taking record.

Mbeumo had already scored from open play just six minutes earlier, in what would eventually be a dramatic 3-2 win for Fulham in the race to qualify for European football next season.

Who are the Premier League's best penalty takers?

Leno's save on Sunday means Mbeumo can no longer overtake former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure as the Premier League's best-ever penalty taker.

The Ivorian scored all 11 of his spot-kicks in the division, one more than current Fulham striker Raul Jimenez has scored without ever missing.

Former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur forward Dimitar Berbatov, ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves, and Nottingham Forest forward Chris Wood are the only other players who have a 100 per cent scoring rate after taking eight or more penalties.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer impressively converted his first 12 penalties in a row, but lost his 100-per-cent scoring record this season, when his 13th Premier League penalty was saved by Leicester City goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.

Mbeumo's run almost ended back in January, when he hit a post with his initial penalty at Crystal Palace. However, a retake was ordered after a VAR review, for encroachment by Marc Guehi, and Mbeumo scored past Dean Henderson - Palace's penalty-saving hero in yesterday's FA Cup final - at the second attempt.

Players who have scored all of their PL penalties*

Yaya Toure 11
Raul Jimenez 10
