Ben Knight put Man City in front on 18 minutes before Thomas Cannon headed in a second-half equaliser.
But Cole Palmer's deflected shot restored their lead and Samuel Edozie struck a superb solo goal as City took advantage of Blackburn's 6-4 loss at Manchester United to go top on goal difference.
