We're at that odd part of the season where Fantasy Premier League Draft managers have to start evaluating the evidence presented over the first half of the campaign.

Watford were objectively bad through the opening months but they now appear to be above average. Is that just a bump associated with a new head coach or is the change real?

Jose Mourinho has a reputation as a safety-first manager who is more likely to oversee clean sheets than big-goal totals. The evidence of his time at Tottenham Hotspur is that we have to change that perception.

Like Watford, both Southampton and Arsenal seem to be rebounding as well.

As you look to your waiver-wire transactions, these are the types of trends to pay attention to while you wait for someone to buy a big player in the transfer market.

Here are my waiver-wire priorities ahead of the Matchweek 23 deadline:

GKP: Paulo Gazzaniga (TOT)

I do believe in Watford's revival and I do believe that Mourinho is overseeing a flawed defence at Spurs. But with few options available and Watford and Norwich City as their next two opponents, Gazzaniga is my bet among the plausibly available goalkeepers this week.

DEF: Reece James (CHE)

I was surprised to see that James was available in two of my eight-team leagues. Between his excellent form and Chelsea's upcoming match-up at Newcastle United he is both a great short-term and longer-term addition.

MID: Ismaila Sarr (WAT)

You most likely, and rightly, noted that my endorsement of Gazzaniga above wasn't the most ringing one ever. One of the reasons for that is the surprisingly available Sarr. I liked what I saw against Arsenal in the UEFA Europa League last season and he seems to be coming into his own now that he's at Watford. If he's available, he'd be a priority.

FWD: Troy Deeney (WAT)

The usual suspects, mostly wearing Sheffield United jerseys, are likely available, as is Jordan Ayew. If he's still available, I'm prioritising Watford's Deeney. He seems to be healthy now and the perfect foil for Sarr and Gerard Deulofeu. He's not going to replace your Harry Kane or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang levels of production but he'll at least be solid.
