Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen says Virgil van Dijk is the world's best centre-back.

The 28-year-old has become a crucial player for Liverpool since joining from Southampton in January 2018 and claimed his 28th clean sheet in 56 Premier League appearances for the club as the Reds won 3-0 at Burnley on Saturday.

"He's that type of player where they never ever seem as if they're extended," Owen said.

"You always feel they've got gears and you never see him dive in, you never see him on the floor. They always seem to be in control of themselves and in control of their opponent."

Van Dijk was named UEFA Player of the Year last week, becoming the first defender to win the award.

"He is a machine, he's the best centre-half in the world, no question," added Owen.
