1999: Dean Richards lands at Southampton

Dean Richards completed his move to Southampton from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a free transfer.

The central defender replaced the popular Ken Monkou at The Dell but soon became a fan favourite, winning the supporters’ Player of the Year award in the first of his three seasons with the south-coast side.

Richards scored three times in 67 PL appearances for Saints before joining Tottenham Hotspur.

Having made 140 Premier League appearances, illness brought an end to his playing career in 2005.

Richards passed away in February 2011, aged 36, following a long-term illness.
