Sheffield United lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa but still secured a place in the last 16 of the Premier League Cup.
Colin Odutayo scored the only goal of the match at Stocksbridge Park Steels in the ninth minute.
Aston Villa, who had already qualified, went through to the last 16 as winners of Group E.
Sheffield United, who finished above Ipswich Town on goal difference, will face Derby County at home in the first knockout round of the competition, on a date to be decided.
Villa will quickly resume PL Cup action when they take on Premier League 2 Division 2 leaders Blackburn Rovers at Villa Park on Friday.
