Connor Thomson came off the bench to help Blackburn Rovers claim a 2-0 win over Newcastle United in Northumberland.

After Callum Smith had struck the bar for Newcastle, substitute Thomson put Rovers in front on 32 minutes when his cross deflected in off defender Macaulay Gillesphey.

Callum Wright came on with 15 minutes remaining and made it 2-0 with a thunderous 20-yard strike to to condemn Newcastle to a fifth successive defeat in all competitions.

Newcastle's next PL2 match is away to Aston Villa on 30 October and Blackburn are at home to Stoke City the same day.
