Southampton have announced the signing of Martin Caceres on a free transfer.

The 29-year-old defender moves to St Mary’s on a deal until June after leaving Juventus at the end of 2015/16.

Caceres, who will wear the number 12 shirt, has 68 caps for Uruguay and has also played at Barcelona and Sevilla. He strengthens a Southampton defence recently hit by an ankle injury to Virgil van Dijk .

"In a tough situation for us, losing Virgil to injury, he [Caceres] will bring experience, talent and character,” Les Reed, the Southampton executive director of football, told “He has played in the biggest of games, and will provide depth to our squad.”
