Southampton have announced the signing of Martin Caceres on a free transfer.

The 29-year-old defender moves to St Mary’s on a deal until June after leaving Juventus at the end of 2015/16.

Caceres, who will wear the number 12 shirt, has 68 caps for Uruguay and has also played at Barcelona and Sevilla. He strengthens a Southampton defence recently hit by an ankle injury to Virgil van Dijk .

"In a tough situation for us, losing Virgil to injury, he [Caceres] will bring experience, talent and character,” Les Reed, the Southampton executive director of football, told southamptonfc.com. “He has played in the biggest of games, and will provide depth to our squad.”
