Everton's hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the Premier League International Cup were ended by a 2-1 defeat by Athletic Bilbao at Goodison Park.
Needing a win to have hope of progressing as one of the two best group runners-up from Group F Everton took an early lead through Callum Connolly's header.
Jonjoe Kenny had a chance to double the lead but his penalty was saved by Unai Simon and shortly before half-time, Inigo Cordoba equalised.
Unai Nunez hit a late winner for Athletic, who finish second to Hertha Berlin in the group, while Everton are third, three points ahead of Reading.
