Kevin De Bruyne cemented his status as a Premier League great last season with a host of awards and accolades.

The Belgian was voted the 2019/20 EA SPORTS Player of the Season, won the Playmaker award for the most assists and became only the second player to win the competition's Budweiser Goal of the Month twice in the same season.

Manchester City's former captain Vincent Kompany has witnessed his compatriot's development first-hand, and one moment of the midfielder's career stands out as particularly significant, De Bruyne's match-winning strike at Stamford Bridge in September 2017, on the way to the club's 2017/18 title triumph.

'Defining time'

"What stays with me is [Kevin’s] goal against Chelsea," says Kompany in City's new feature-length documentary, Made in Belgium, which charts De Bruyne's rise.

"It was a defining time. It was a very difficult away game. Chelsea were a strong team as well at the time. It wasn’t a game where you said, 'We're going to have clear chances.'

"Usually we’re like a team. They’re all team goals. But that was him, from the beginning to the end actually, creating the action and creating the space.

"Big players in big moments. That was a big moment for him."

Pep Guardiola also recognises the significance of De Bruyne’s strike in that 1-0 win, scored with his supposedly weaker left foot against his former club, as City went on to claim 100 points and win the first of back-to-back Premier League titles.

"That I think were the first days we believed in ourselves, me included, to say, 'OK we are able to go away in the biggest stages,' " said the club's manager.

"That was so important for all of us, so important to say, 'Wow, we are able to go away and make a good performance.' "
