FPL DGW37 stats: RECORD set for chips played in a Gameweek

A whopping 2.38million Fantasy Premier League managers used a chip in Double Gameweek 37 (DGW37), setting an all-time record in the game.

This week's tally narrowly beat the previous best of 2.35m, which was recorded earlier this season in Double Gameweek 25 (DGW25).

Over 726,000 used their Triple Captain chip, the second-highest total this term after the record 1.58m set in DGW25.

More than 200,000 Wildcarded and 150,000+ played their Free Hit chip.

But by far the most-popular chip was the Bench Boost, which was used by 1.3m managers, setting ANOTHER record.

Six teams played twice in DGW37, making it an ideal time for managers to deploy the Bench Boost, as they could double the chances of their substitutes producing returns.

It's only the second time that more than 1m Bench Boost chips have been played in a Gameweek, surpassing last season's high of 1.1m from Double Gameweek 29. 

Top five Gameweeks for Bench Boost

Josko Gvardiol (£5.1m) was the star of DGW37 for the 524,000+ who selected him in their Bench Boost teams.

He scored twice and kept a clean sheet for a 21-point haul in Manchester City's 4-0 win at Fulham, equaling Conor Bradley's (£4.2m) total from Gameweek 22, the best return by a defender in a match this season.

Gvardiol then added a clean sheet in the 2-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, taking his tally to 27 points for the Gameweek.

In doing so, he equalled John Stones’ (£5.3m) score from DGW19 of the 2020/21 season but fell three points short of breaking the all-time record for the most points by a defender in a Gameweek, set by Aston Villa's Matty Cash (£4.5m) in DGW28 of the 2021/22 season.

Phil Foden (£8.5m) was also among the scorers at Craven Cottage, netting his 17th goal of 2023/24, but was unable to add to that on Tuesday evening.

Facing Gvardiol and Foden in midweek was Pedro Porro (£5.9m), found in more than 581,000 Bench Boost teams.

The Spurs defender registered his 10th attacking return of the campaign with a goal in the 2-1 victory over Burnley on Saturday, but a blank in midweek saw him finish the round on 10 points.

Cole Palmer (£6.3m) was the most-owned player among the teams Bench Boosting, selected by 96 per cent.

The Chelsea talisman continued his excellent form with an assist and a share of the bonus in a 3-2 win at Nottingham Forest. He then scored the opening goal as the Blues won 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Palmer now sits top of the Fantasy player standings on 238 points, 12 clear of Bukayo Saka (£8.9m) and Ollie Watkins (£8.9m).

Saka was one of four Arsenal players in the most-popular Bench Boost XV, and the only one to blank.

The other three, Benjamin White (£6.1m), William Saliba (£5.9m) and Gabriel (£5.4m) all collected clean sheets in a narrow 1-0 success at Manchester United.

DGW37 most Triple-Captained players

Having hit four goals and 21 points in the previous round for his best return of the season, it was no surprise that Erling Haaland topped the Triple Captain choice.

And after a disappointing blank in Saturday's 4-0 victory at Fulham, he rewarded his 458,000+ backers with two goals and maximum bonus in the win at Spurs. 

Palmer was the main differential pick for those using their Triple Captain chip, with Alexander Isak (£8.4m) completing the top three. 

But Isak endured a frustrating pair of matches, blanking first in the 1-1 draw at home to Brighton and again in the 3-2 defeat at Manchester United.

DGW37 most captained players

In addition to the 458,000+ who used their Triple Captain chip on Haaland, another 4.98m people made the Norwegian their captain, which represented his biggest backing in 10 Gameweeks.

Joining Haaland, Palmer and Isak among the most-popular captains overall were Mohamed Salah (£13.4m) and Son Heung-min (£10.0m).

Last weekend, Salah ended a run of four matches without a return as he registered a goal and two assists in Gameweek 36.

But unfortunately for the 558,000+ Fantasy bosses who handed him the armband, he was unable to continue that form in Liverpool's 3-3 draw with Aston Villa, finishing on two points.

Elsewhere, it was an inauspicious round for Son.

As well as having four shots, he created a match-high five chances in the win over Burnley. This included a big chance, spurned by Brennan Johnson (£5.8m).

The roles were reversed in the defeat to Man City, however, with Johnson setting up Son for a big chance that was saved brilliantly by Stefan Ortega (£3.6m).

Top 100 managers' GW36 captains

The majority of the leading 100 managers in Fantasy followed the masses, with 97 of this elite group selecting Haaland for the captaincy.

Isak and Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) were the only differentials, chosen by two managers each.

De Bruyne earned 12 points in DGW37, supplying an assist in Man City's win at Fulham, and another assist at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, taking his tally to eight attacking returns in seven appearances.

DGW37 most-bought players

For the third time this season, Haaland was the Gameweek's most-bought player.

Nicolas Jackson (£7.0m) was next on the shopping list for Fantasy managers, snapped up by more than 839,000.

He scored and collected five points in Chelsea's 3-2 success at the City Ground but a blank at Brighton followed.

The forward is enjoying his best spell of the campaign with 47 points in his last seven matches thanks to five goals and three assists. Jackson's conversion rate has improved to 28 per cent in that time, up from 16 per cent.

Anthony Gordon (£6.4m) was recruited in large numbers for Newcastle's two matches, with his home form particularly impressive - his 22 attacking returns is the most of any player.

However, he blanked at St. James' Park for only the second time in 2023/24.

But to the relief of his 667,000+ new owners, he redeemed himself with a goal and six points at Old Trafford.
