How external events play an important part in how the Premier League fixtures are produced

Carnivals, religious and music festivals, rugby matches and marathons.

These are all events that add to the headache of compiling the 2018/19 Premier League fixture list.

When clubs submit their requests in March for consideration ahead of the next season's fixtures, they include local festivals that coincide with Premier League matches and so can affect first-aid provision and/or policing needs in that area.

The growing popularity of marathons means that three city races, in Southampton, Manchester, Wolverhampton, as well as the Great North Run in Newcastle and a marathon in Bournemouth, need to be factored in when compiling the PL fixtures.

Other events include the Bournemouth Air Show, the Huddersfield Chapeltown Festival and Diwali in Leicester, as well as Wales rugby matches in Cardiff this year.
