Erling Haaland scored two goals and created another as Manchester City claimed bragging rights in the derby with a 3-0 win over Manchester United.

The Norwegian netted a first-half penalty and completed his double with a header shortly after the break, before setting up Phil Foden for a third as City closed the gap on leaders Tottenham Hotspur to two points.

How the match unfolded

In Man Utd’s first Premier League home match since the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, applause rang out from all sides of Old Trafford prior to kick-off as players and fans from both clubs paid tribute.

The visitors controlled the early proceedings and in the eighth minute, Harry Maguire reacted quickest to clear the ball off the line before Haaland could reach it.

City were awarded a penalty on 26 minutes following a VAR review after Rasmus Hojlund was adjudged to have fouled Rodri, and Haaland stepped up to send Andre Onana the wrong way.

It is incredibly the first penalty awarded to City at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Both goalkeepers were called into action in first-half stoppage time, with Ederson denying Scott McTominay before Onana was forced into a flying save to keep out a Haaland header.

Haaland scored his and City’s second four minutes after the restart, heading in from a brilliant Bernardo Silva cross for his league-leading 11th goal of the season.

It was Haaland's 20th goal in 23 Premier League away appearances, the fewest matches needed to reach this tally in the competition, overtaking Kevin Phillips’ record of 20 goals in his first 28 away fixtures.

Marcus Rashford spurned a great opportunity to pull a goal back before Haaland was denied a second hat-trick against United by another Onana stop.

City did add a third goal with 10 minutes remaining. Following a remarkable 53 pass sequence, Rodri's shot was parried by Onana straight to Haaland, who unselfishly squared for Foden to finish.

It was Haaland’s eighth Premier League goal involvement in Manchester derbies in his third such match, matching Sergio Aguero’s total and trailing only three players in the competition’s history

Pep Guardiola's side are third on 24 points, level with Arsenal.

A fifth defeat of the season for Man Utd, their most from the first 10 matches of a Premier League campaign, leaves them in eighth on 15 points.
