Brazilian reaches century of shutouts in fewer matches than Schmeichel, Seaman and Van der Sar

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson reached a significant milestone, keeping his 100th Premier League clean sheet in Saturday’s 2-0 home win over Newcastle United.

While that achievement is worthy of celebration in itself, the Brazilian can take extra pride from the fact he is the third-fastest goalkeeper to reach a century of shutouts in the competition, doing so in 208 matches.

Appearances after 100 clean sheets
Goalkeeper Club Date Appearances
Petr Cech Chelsea 13 Apr 2010 180
Pepe Reina Liverpool 6 Dec 2010 198
Ederson Man City 4 Mar 2023 208
Peter Schmeichel Man Utd 28 Feb 1998 212
David Seaman Arsenal 3 Apr 1999 225
Edwin van der Sar Man Utd 27 Jan 2009 246

Ederson has needed fewer appearances to reach 100 clean sheets than Premier League greats such as Peter Schmeichel, David Seaman and Edwin van der Sar.

Only Petr Cech and Pepe Reina have reached the milestone quicker than the Man City goalkeeper.

Ederson could go on to set a Premier League record this season, becoming the first goalkeeper to win the Castrol Golden Glove award in four successive seasons.

However, he has work to do to retain that title for the most clean sheets in a season.

Even after his latest shutout, he is three behind the15 clean sheets of leader Nick Pope, and all of Ederson's main rivals have at least one extra match to play this season.

Goalkeeper Fixtures to play Clean sheets
Nick Pope 14 12
Aaron Ramsdale 13 11
David De Gea 14 10
Alisson 14 9
Ederson 12 9
David Raya 15 8
