FPL experts: What to do with Liverpool players?

The Scout's panel of experts discuss whether the Reds are still a wise investment in Fantasy

After Liverpool's defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Community Shield on Sunday, with Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) missing a penalty for the second match in a row, The Scout's panel of Fantasy Premier League experts offer advice on whether to invest in the Reds' players ahead of the Gameweek 1 deadline on Friday at 18:30 BST.

In the Community Shield, Liverpool's attack looked like they were nearly on the same wavelength, with Florian Wirtz (£8.5m) in particular impressively pulling the strings. Defensively though, they looked all at sea at times and clearly the new signings need to settle in with the old guard.

I'll therefore take Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) out of my team, but I'm still keen on a double-up in attack, with Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) and one other.

Az Phillips (@FPLBlackBox_Az)

It was great seeing Wirtz at the heart of everything against Palace and, even though Salah had a quiet game, his average position as the furthest player up the pitch was encouraging.

I was not impressed with their defence at all, however. It might be a case of having to win games by scoring lots of goals, which is great for doubling up on their attack, but I think I may cool my expectations for Van Dijk and look elsewhere at £6.0m.

Andy North (@FPLMode)

My opinions on Liverpool's attack have stayed the same. Salah is still on penalties and plays almost every minute. Wirtz is also heavily involved, despite being new to the league.

I do think the defence should be monitored. Van Dijk had a poor outing and moving to James Tarkowski (£5.5m) or Pedro Porro (£5.5m) isn't the worst idea to free up £0.5m. Bare in mind though, this Palace attack are firing on all cylinders and AFC Bournemouth won't be half as potent when the season starts on Friday.

I wanted to start the season with three Liverpool players. However, the defensive performance in the Community Shield has meant that I am no longer keen on owning one of the defenders, at least until Gameweek 4.

I am therefore starting the season with Salah and Wirtz, which gives me some flexibility with bringing in a third Liverpool player later on. If they don't sign another forward then Hugo Ekitike (£8.5m) could be an excellent option up front. If I owned a Liverpool defender in addition to Salah and Wirtz, and I wanted Ekitike instead, then I'd have to make two transfers - selling the defender as well as buying Ekitike, because we're only allowed three players from each club. But if I DON'T own a defender then it would only need one transfer.

My opinion on Salah hasn't changed after the Community Shield as he always struggles against Palace due to their shape. He will be my captain in Gameweek 1 and I'll also be having Wirtz alongside him.

Salah and Wirtz have been further cemented in my team after the Community Shield but I've decided to go without any Liverpool defenders and move money into  attack instead to get Jean-Philippe Mateta (£7.5m), who appears to be on penalty duties for Palace.

Holly Shand (@HollyShand

After watching Liverpool's Community Shield performance I feel that I need to be doubled up on their attack. It's Salah and Wirtz who make my latest team. I have been put off by their defence and I now may avoid that £6.0m defender price bracket.

Nick Harris (@WGTA_Nick

My opinion on Liverpool remains the same. I have three Liverpool players in my side including Salah, who will be my captain. One game will not deter me from targeting their key players and I expect the likes of Van Dijk, Wirtz and Salah to be regularly in the points all through the season.

Pras (@Pras_FPL)

Salah and Wirtz are still very much in my thinking. However, I am debating the merits of Van Dijk when Ryan Gravenberch (£5.5m) is suspended in Gameweek 1 and Alexis Mac Allister (£6.5m) may not start again, so Liverpool may be more open in midfield.

They then play Newcastle United and Arsenal. It also leaves a slot open for a third attacker because the fixtures in Gameweek 4 and 5, against Burnley and Everton respectively, are very appealing.

Gianni Buttice (@GianniButtice

Nothing has changed for me, I was always going to have Salah and Wirtz and I'm still locked on that decision. Likewise, I was committed to no Liverpool defender as I expect them to concede in at least two of their opening three games. I do think this Liverpool team will score more than any other side this season, but expect them to perhaps concede more than last season.
