Barnes scores Premier League's LATEST EVER winning goal

Harvey Barnes celebrates after scoring the winning goal for Newcastle United against Leeds United

Newcastle winger seizes record from Cole Palmer for latest winning goal after scoring in 12th minute of stoppage time v Leeds

Harvey Barnes fired his way into the Premier League's record books on Wednesday night when he scored the competition's latest winning goal.

The Newcastle United winger's stoppage-time strike to seal a remarkable 4-3 comeback victory over Leeds United at St James' Park was timed at 101 minutes and 48 seconds by Opta, the League’s official data supplier.

It came more than a minute later than the goal which had held the record since such data was recorded by Opta from 2006/07. That was Cole Palmer's April 2024 goal for Chelsea against Manchester United, in another 4-3 thriller, which was timed at 100 minutes and 41 seconds.

St James' Park has now witnessed two of the five latest winning goals in Premier League history THIS SEASON. There were 99 minutes and 44 seconds on the clock when Rio Ngumoha scored for Liverpool in their 3-2 win over Newcastle in August. That strike also meant the 16-year-old became Liverpool's youngest-ever goalscorer.

Barnes and Palmer are the only Premier League players who have scored winners beyond the 100-minute mark, although Dejan Kulusevski was just seven seconds short with his decisive strike for Tottenham Hotspur against Sheffield United in September 2023 (99 minutes 53 seconds).

In total, six winning goals have been timed at 99 minutes or later, as listed below.

The Premier League's latest-ever goals

There is actually one Premier League goal that was scored even later in a match than Barnes' winner for Newcastle against Leeds.

Sheff Utd, who were involved in two of the late winning goals above, produced the latest strike in the competition's history when they drew 2-2 with West Ham United on 21 January 2024. Oli McBurnie's equaliser from the penalty spot was timed at 102 minutes and eight seconds.

Meanwhile, Dirk Kuyt's penalty for Liverpool against Arsenal in April 2011 was given the exact same timestamp as Barnes' effort, 101 minutes and 48 seconds, but the Dutchman's goal was an equaliser, not a winner.
