Manolo Gabbiadini headed against the crossbar inside the opening two minutes, and Dusan Tadic shot wide after Ryan Bertrand’s low cross moments later.
Swansea went close themselves as Tammy Abraham headed just wide before seeing a shot blocked by Cedric Soares.
The draws means Saints have won one of their 11 opening-day matches, while Swansea have got at least a draw in each of the last four years.
