Paddy McCarthy, who oversaw Sunday's 4-1 loss at leaders Arsenal, has taken the role as Hodgson's assistant manager. Hodgson's long-term colleague Ray Lewington has also returned to the club in the role of first-team coach.

“It is a privilege to be asked to return to the club, which has always meant so much to me, and to be given the important task of turning the team’s fortunes around," Hodgson told the club's official website.

"Our sole objective now is to start winning matches, and to get the points necessary to ensure our Premier League status. Crystal Palace is known for its fighting spirit, and I have no doubt that all our supporters will fight with us."

Hodgson previously managed Palace between 2017 and 2021. He kept them up in 2017/18 when he took over from Frank de Boer after they had lost their first four matches of the season without scoring.

In his first full season Palace equalled their best ever points tally in a Premier League campaign.

The 75-year-old, the oldest manager in Premier League history, has taken charge of six Premier League clubs during a long career that started as a player with Palace in the 1960s.
