Andros Townsend was surprised to learn he is the first player to win the Budweiser Goal of the Month award three times but puts it down to a confidence in having a shot from distance.

The Everton winger earned September 2021's award with his spectacular long-range effort at home to Burnley.

"That's amazing!" says Townsend upon learning no one else has won the prize three times.

"It's been a while since I've had one. It's great to be scoring goals from outside the box and long may it continue."

'Nothing tops City goal'

Townsend first won the monthly award with a solo effort for Crystal Palace at West Bromwich Albion in March 2017 and then with a sensational first-time volley at Manchester City in December 2018.

His goal at Man City also clinched the 2018/19 Budweiser Goal of the Season, and while he admits that nothing will surpass that strike, his effort for Everton is not far behind.

"Nothing can top the Man City goal unfortunately - nothing will ever top that - but it sits a close second," Townsend says.

He has 25 goals in the Premier League, including three for Everton in just seven matches, and the stats also show why Townsend has earned a reputation for scoring the spectacular.

The average distance from which the 30-year-old has scored his Premier League goals is 19.6 metres.

It is the fourth-longest average by any player with 20+ goals in the competition since 2006/07.

Twelve of his 25 goals have been from outside the box.

Longest ave. goal distance
  Goals Average distance (m)
Jonjo Shelvey 21 20.7
Sebastian Larsson 26 20.4
James Maddison 21 19.7
Andros Townsend 25 19.6
Philippe Coutinho 41 19.2

*Minimum 20 goals scored since 2006/07

"It's the technique I have on both feet," he explains. "I'm able to shoot comfortably with both feet.

"You've seen so far this season I've had some shots from outside the box this season and I've missed a few.

"I'm not afraid to miss or take a shot, so every now and then you catch one perfectly and it goes into the top corner, like it did against Burnley."
