MAN OF THE MATCH?

Match summary

Ahmed El Mohamady scored a late equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw for Aston Villa at Newcastle United.

In a first half of few clear-cut chances, Mbwana Samatta headed over for the visitors, while Tyrone Mings made a brilliant block to deny Joelinton at the other end.

Newcastle made the breakthrough on 68 minutes when Dwight Gayle finished into the far corner just 94 seconds after coming off the bench.

But with seven minutes remaining, substitutes Conor Hourihane and El Mohamady combined, with the latter turning the ball in from a corner.

Newcastle are 13th with 39 points.

Villa remain 19th but are now inside the relegation zone on goal difference alone, having moved level with AFC Bournemouth and West Ham United on 27 points.
