Tactics expert Adrian Clarke analyses five signings likely to transform their new teams' style of play.
After Arsenal's Granit Xhaka, Everton's Idrissa Gana Gueye and Roberto Pereyra of Watford, he looks at a game-changer signed by Jurgen Klopp.
Sadio Mane
From a visual perspective, Sadio Mane has transformed the look of Klopp's Liverpool side.
With the lively Senegal winger on board the Reds are able to drag defenders out of position in a way they struggled to last term.
During his first two away appearances of the season, at Emirates Stadium and White Hart Lane, Mane tormented the hosts with some direct and purposeful forward play.
Operating from the right but driving inside from unusual angles, the man bought from Southampton can be incredibly tricky to pick up. Receiving passes on the half-turn in pockets of space, his elusiveness will provide headaches all season long.
Liverpool's top speeds 2016/17
Player | Speed |
Sadio Mane | 34.67km/h |
Philippe Coutinho | 33.98km/h |
Jordan Henderson | 33.16km/h |
Nathaniel Clyne | 33.08km/h |
Dejan Lovren | 33.07km/h |
Last season Liverpool didn't have that type of option and were a little bit short on pace, too.
Overloaded with technical talents who prefer the ball to feet, Divock Origi was their main outlet and the keenest to make runs in behind. But most of those runs were down the middle or in the traditional centre-forward channels.
Mane can surprise defenders with runs that start from deeper areas or from wide. This is more likely to create confusion.
Posing a threat with the ball at his feet, or when chasing it, the 24-year-old diversifies his side's weaponry.
The summer signing also fits in beautifully with Klopp's high-tempo philosophy. Prepared to close people down with just as much enthusiasm as he uses to go past them, Mane has given the starting XI plenty of added value.
Mane's Liverpool rankings
Category | Value | Liverpool rank |
Top speed | 34.67km/h | 1st |
Sprints per match | 69 | 2nd |
Fouled | 9 | 1st |
Dribbles per match | 2.5 | 1st |
Tackles won | 7 | 3rd |
Having an option for pace such as Mane also affords Klopp the chance to use a fluid front three that includes Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.
Both Brazilians are benefitting in advanced roles, with less focus on them, and no target man in the side, they enjoy a tad more freedom.
It is early days for Mane at Anfield, but the signs suggest he's capable of helping Liverpool to reach the next level.
