Eight matches, three goals, two assists and one England call-up. It’s been a dream start to life in the Premier League for James Maddison.

The 21-year-old midfielder joined Leicester City from Norwich City this summer and made his PL debut at Manchester United on the opening day of the campaign.

His performances have impressed Gareth Southgate, who has selected him in the full England squad for the UEFA Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain this Friday and Monday.

Rewind to 2016 and he was playing for his boyhood club Coventry City in League One.

He left the Sky Blues for Norwich in February that year and it was not until April 2017, after going on loan at Aberdeen that he made his league debut for the Canaries, where he earned his move to Leicester.

Rapid rise

Maddison spoke exclusively about his journey to the Foxes, looking through photographs from different stages.

He was quick to show his gratitude at such a rapid rise to the top.

"It was like a dream come true, signing for a Premier League team," Maddison says. "I use the word 'grateful' quite a lot, because I think it's important.

"You have to be grateful. Leicester paid the money for me and gave me that chance to show what I can do in the Premier League."

His debut in the Premier League came on one of its biggest stages, Old Trafford, and felt like a baptism of fire.

'Surreal feeling'

"Playing against the likes of Paul Pogba, it's a surreal feeling," he says.

"He's been a big name in world football and I'm standing next to him in the tunnel. He's about seven foot by the way!

"Those are the moments I've worked so hard for, to play at Old Trafford against the likes of Pogba, the best players in the world."

His journey started with Wyken Boys, a team in a suburb of Coventry.

Baby steps

"As soon as I could walk I was kicking a football," he says. "I just remember, just play up front and score as many goals as you can.

"I went every step of the way with Coventry City, from a young boy, when I had a trial there when I was six years old, just before my seventh birthday."

Now, a month shy of his 22nd birthday Maddison could make his England debut to add another landmark moment to a remarkable journey.
