The Scout looks at how the additions of David Luiz and Marcos Alonso will affect Antonio Conte's backline

Antonio Conte has been quick to make an impact at Stamford Bridge.

The new Chelsea head coach has guided his team to wins in each of the first three Gameweeks, scoring seven goals and conceding only twice so far.

Having been breached 53 times in last term's title defence, the Blues look a different proposition altogether at the back this season.

Chelsea have allowed their opponents a mere 11 efforts inside the box, conceding an attempt on goal every 14.9 minutes - on both counts, that is better than any other Premier League side.

In spite of this upturn in resilience, Conte drafted in David Luiz (£6.0m) and Marcos Alonso (£6.0m) on deadline day to boost his defensive options.

The arrival of both players places uncertainty over Conte's preferred personnel and tactics.

Returning to the club from Paris Saint-Germain, Luiz now provides competition for John Terry (£5.5m) and Gary Cahill (£6.0m) at centre-half, with the Brazilian also boasting a real threat from long-range efforts.

Alonso offers the Blues an option on the left of a back-four and, like Luiz, has previous Premier League experience, having played for Sunderland and Bolton Wanderers.

In turn, this could allow Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.0m) to challenge Branislav Ivanovic (£6.0m) for the right-back berth in a four-man defence.

There is also the chance that Conte could opt for the 3-5-2 set-up he utilised so successfully at Juventus.

The Italian has employed a 4-1-4-1 formation since the summer arrival of N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) from Leicester City, with the Frenchman sitting in front of the back-four.

Both Luiz and Alonso can play centrally in a three-man backline, though the latter can also be utilised as a left wing-back in such a system.

Having served up three goals and four assists in Serie A last season, Alonso boasts a significant threat down the flank and is one for FPL managers to monitor - particularly if he's stationed as a wing-back.

Whether Conte is prepared to immediately change his team sheets or tactical approach after such a promising set of results over August remains to be seen, though.

FPL managers looking for a secure route into the Blues' rearguard are best advised to keep a watching brief for now, allowing Conte to fine-tune his approach as Chelsea prepare for a testing run of matches that pits them against Liverpool, Arsenal, Leicester City and Manchester United in the next six Gameweeks.
