Building a squad in Fantasy Premier League Draft is very different from constructing one for FPL.

In Draft, there are no player prices or squad budgets.

There is also no captain.

And a Premier League player can be owned by only one manager in a mini-league.

So with less reliance on one or two big-hitters, a strong all-round squad is achievable.

Consistency key

Seeking out players with a consistent record of points scoring is equally important.

Acquiring those reliable options in the early rounds of the draft process can make all the difference when it comes to winning a Gameweek head-to-head.

The Scout looks at defenders who have been mainly ignored in FPL but who could be key figures for draft managers in 2018/19.

Antonio Valencia (MUN)

The Ecuadorian is the likeliest consistent starter among Manchester United's back four this season.

The United defence was the tightest in 2017/18, claiming 19 clean sheets.

And Valencia was one of the most reliable defenders, supplying points returns in 18 of his 31 appearances.

He totalled three goals, an assist and 16 clean sheets.

Nicolas Otamendi (MCI)

An ability to produce goals, clean sheets and bonus points earned the Argentinian third place among FPL defenders in 2017/18.

Otamendi claimed four goals, 15 shutouts and 21 bonus points to total 156 points.

Manchester City's defensive record played a part. They conceded 27 goals, fewer than any side, and chalked up 18 clean sheets.

That helped Otamendi produce points in 17 of his 34 Gameweek appearances.

Ben Davies (TOT)

A total of 29 appearances last season shows Davies remains a slight rotation concern for Tottenham Hotspur.

Yet his ability to deliver big hauls makes him an ideal option in Draft.

He combined a goal or an assist with a clean sheet on four occasions, returning points in 15 of his 26 starts.

Only three other defenders surpassed Davies's 4.9 points per match average in 2017/18.

Patrick van Aanholt (CRY)

Only 5.2 per cent of FPL managers are backing the raiding Dutchman.

But with no player prices in Draft, Van Aanholt is the standout option in Crystal Palace's defence.

He has scored at least five goals in each of the last three seasons.

The Palace backline was revived once Roy Hodgson was appointed manager in Gameweek 5.

They produced nine clean sheets from that point; a total bettered only by teams finishing in the top seven places.

David Luiz (CHE)

The arrival of new head coach Maurizio Sarri from Napoli could force a reassessment of Chelsea's defence.

They are set to line up in a 4-3-3 formation, which could limit the attacking raids of wing-backs such as Marcos Alonso, who thrived under Antonio Conte.

Luiz could be their go-to option for managers this term.

In his last full season for the Blues in 2016/17, the Brazilian ranked among the top six defenders for both shots, with 31, and shots on target, with 10.
