2002: Michael Svensson joins Southampton

Sweden international Michael Svensson transferred to Southampton from French club Troyes.

The centre-back enjoyed a superb debut season in English football, scoring twice in 34 Premier League appearances as Saints finished eighth, then a club record position, and reached the FA Cup final.

Svensson remained in the heart of Southampton’s defence as they climbed as high as fourth in 2003/04, before they dropped to 12th in the second half of the season and injury ruled the defender out from March onwards.

Serious injuries kept Svensson out until October 2005, when Saints were in the Championship, before he eventually left the club in 2009 after another long-term lay-off.
