2001: Leicester City 0-4 Southampton

Anders Svensson inspired Southampton to a resounding victory over fellow strugglers Leicester City.

The midfielder opened the scoring with his first Premier League goal, following his summer arrival from Elfsborg, and James Beattie extended the advantage before Svensson struck again. Marian Pahars completed the rout.

The win moved Southampton out of the bottom three, leaving them 17th on 13 points, with just goal difference keeping them out of danger. Leicester remained in the relegation zone in 19th, also with 13 points.

2007: Aston Villa 1-3 Portsmouth

Portsmouth recorded their sixth successive away win as they overcame Aston Villa in the Midlands.

Craig Gardner’s ninth-minute own goal put Portsmouth ahead, and two outstanding Sulley Muntari strikes then took the visitors out of sight.

Gareth Barry’s penalty was only a consolation goal.

Victory for Portsmouth meant that they leapfrogged their opponents into fifth place on 30 points, while Aston Villa dropped to eighth on 27 points.
