Sky Sports' Will Rickson on how two goalkeepers with contrasting styles could decide the winners of the Manchester derby

David De Gea may have to reproduce more of the record-equalling heroics he displayed at Arsenal last weekend if Manchester United are to cut Manchester City's eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League on Sunday, writes Sky Sports’ Will Rickson.

Using expected goals (xG) data, De Gea's saves have effectively earned United points in four matches this season.

This includes turning a defeat into a win against Arsenal with a joint PL-record 14 stops, and he has also kept clean sheets in three matches where the expected goals of United's opponents have exceeded one.

It means De Gea is way out in front for expected goals prevented in 2017/18, almost twice as good as Burnley's Nick Pope.

De Gea's opposite number on Sunday will be Ederson, whose tally of 20 saves this season is far fewer than De Gea's 53, which can be bettered only by Lukasz Fabianski’s 61.

But Ederson is impressing in other areas.

His minutes-per-goal-conceded rate is the best in Man City’s PL history, and he also has Joe Hart's club-best record of a clean sheet in 41% of his appearances in his sights.

Whichever goalkeeper performs best on Sunday could make a vital contribution in the title race.
