You’d think that David Unsworth had enough to do at Everton at the moment, what with having to prepare the first team for the trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

But the caretaker manager would not let that stop him from taking part for a second successive year in the Everton in the Community (EiTC) Goodison Sleepout on Friday.

Like in 2016, Unsworth was joined by his Under-23 players, but this year also by more than four times the numbers of Everton fans, more than 200 in total, in the Sir Philip Carter Stand, despite the temperatures dropping to a chilling 5C on Merseyside.

The event last year launched EiTC’s campaign to raise awareness of homelessness, with money raised assisting the club’s official charity in supporting people on the streets in the city of Liverpool, “Home Is Where The Heart Is”.

“I was committed to taking part in this Sleepout and a promise is a promise,” Unsworth said. “Nothing is more important to me right now than having been here tonight.

“Last year’s Sleepout culminated in the launch of our ‘Home Is Where The Heart Is’ campaign and less than 12 months later, we have raised more than a quarter of a million pounds and have secured a property to house vulnerable young adults on the cusp of homelessness.”
