Despite it being a pre-season "friendly", Vincent Kompany expects the first Manchester derby played overseas to be just as ferocious as the Premier League fixture always is.

Manchester City and Manchester United meet at the NRG Stadium in Houston, United States, at 2.30am BST on Friday.

It is City's first 2017/18 pre-season friendly, but Kompany says pleasantries will be kept to a minimum.

“We play against United in a difficult context as it’s a friendly, but never could I play this game as a friendly," he told mancity.com.

“The main thing is to explore the derby feeling so it will be competitive enough but at same time we get what we need out of it as it’s pre-season.”
