Liverpool have signed German attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
The 22-year-old becomes Liverpool's second arrival of the summer transfer window and has signed a long-term contract.
He told the club's official website: “I feel very happy and very proud. Finally it’s done and I was waiting for a long time – finally it’s done and I am really happy.
“I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.
"Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious.
"I'm not coming [to] have fun here, I want also to achieve something and give the fans what they deserve."
Wirtz's career so far
Wirtz was born in Pulheim, Germany on 3 May 2003, joining Koln's academy in 2010.
He signed for Leverkusen aged 16 years and made his senior debut on 18 May 2020 just two weeks after his 17th birthday. Aged 17 years and 15 days, he became the youngest player in the club’s history to feature in the competition, surpassing Kai Havertz.
Wirtz scored against Bayern three weeks later to become the youngest-ever Bundesliga goalscorer at the time, aged 17 years and 34 days.
In 2023/24, he was a central figure in Xabi Alonso’s historic Bayer Leverkusen side, helping them clinch their first-ever Bundesliga title, going unbeaten in the league throughout the entire season.
Leverkusen also lifted the DFB-Pokal that season and reached the UEFA Europa League final, losing to Atalanta, their only defeat in any competition across the entire campaign.
In total, Wirtz featured 197 times for Leverkusen across all competitions, scoring 57 goals and providing 65 assists.
At international level he made his debut for Germany's senior side at the age of 18 and has been capped 31 times. Wirtz was part of the squads that reached the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2024 and the semi-finals of the 2025 UEFA Nations League.
