Ruben Amorim insists he will not resign from his post as Manchester United head coach after the club's UEFA Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur - but would leave if the board and supporters called for it.
The Portuguese was asked at his post-match press conference how confident he is of turning things round, after Man Utd missed out on a place in the Champions League next season - their last chance of qualifying for European football - by losing 1-0 to Spurs in Bilbao.
"In this moment, I’m not going to be here defending myself," said Amorim. "It’s not my style, I cannot do it.
"It’s really hard for me. I have nothing to show to the fans and say ‘I’m going to improve because of this, I have these problems’.
"In this moment it’s a little bit of faith, so let’s see. I’m always open. If the board and the fans feel I’m not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation, but I will not quit.
"I’m really confident about my job and, as you can see, I will not change anything in the way I do things."
'I'm not going to talk about the future'
Amorim was asked how damaging a defeat it could be for the club, who are currently 16th in the Premier League heading into the final match of the season.
"It's in the future, I'm not going to talk about the future. [I will talk about] this loss, the pain of losing this match.
"I share the pain with our fans. They deserve better. We will try everything about the future, we will see what we are going to do.
"We need to understand it’s tough for a club like ours not to be in the Champions League. But we have to use the other side. We will have more time to think, to work during the week, and to be better in the Premier League. That will be our focus."
As for the match itself, Amorim felt "we were the better team but we managed not to score again" and defended his decision to select Mason Mount in his starting XI, instead of Alejandro Garnacho.
"How many times have we had this conversation and it was the opposite?" said Amorim.
"Some players came in, like Mason Mount, against Bilbao and changed the game. So now it is easy to say 'who missed the big opportunity in the first half against Bilbao?' Yeah [it was Garnacho].
"I just look at the game and try to manage things and improve the team and try to win games. I can see it both ways."
