Liverpool have announced the appointment of Arne Slot as their new head coach, subject to a work permit.

The 45-year-old Dutchman arrives from Feyenoord, taking over from Jurgen Klopp, who announced in January his intention to leave at the end of the 2023/24 season, on 1 June.

Klopp announces Slot's arrival

Slot enjoyed a successful three-year spell with Feyenoord, and arrives at Anfield after he delivered one Eredivisie title, the Dutch Cup and reached the UEFA Europa Conference League final.

Slot's early career

Following an 18-year playing career as a midfielder that included stints at FC Zwolle, NAC Breda, Sparta Rotterdam and PEC Zwolle, Slot began his managerial career as joint-head coach at Cambuur in his native Netherlands in 2016.

Slot then moved to AZ in 2017, firstly working as an assistant manager before taking over as head coach ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

In his first season in charge, AZ reached the round of 32 in the UEFA Europa League, also finishing second behind Ajax in the Eredivisie on goal difference, although the season was cancelled due to the pandemic, with no title awarded.

Slot was sacked by AZ in December 2020, and shortly after he agreed a deal to join Dutch giants Feyenoord for the 2021/22 season, winning the title the following year.

He takes over at Anfield from Klopp, who ended his eight-and-a-half year spell at the club with a 2-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on an emotion-packed final day at Anfield.

Slot will find out his opening Premier League match when the 2024/25 fixtures are released at 09:00 BST on Tuesday 18 June. The season will start on 17 August.

Before then, Liverpool will face both Arsenal and Manchester United as part of their pre-season tour to the United States.
