There was a fascinating and hilarious sub-plot to Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 Brentford on Wednesday involving opposing players James Maddison and Neal Maupay.

It all started when Maupay opened the scoring at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and celebrated by copying Maddison's darts celebration.

Spurs' players took exception to Maupay's antics, which seemed to galvanise them as they scored two goals within as many minutes to turn the match around.

After Destiny Udogie equalised, half-time substitute Brennan Johnson made it 2-1 and also celebrated by mimicking throwing a dart, and having a laugh about it with Maddison. 

Richarlison then got in on the act, making it 3-1 and also doing a darts celebration before running past Maupay and giving him some stick.

After the match, there was a warm embrace between Maddison and Maupay, as both sides saw the funny side of things. 

"He probably hasn't scored enough goals of his own these past few years to have his own celebration, so he had to copy mine!" Maddison joked to TNT Sports. 

After hearing of Maddison's gag, Maupay posted on Instagram to have the final say...
