DR Congo have reached the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals by beating seven-time champions Egypt 8-7 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Meschack Elia nodded in a cross from Brentford’s Yoane Wissa to give Congo the lead on 37 minutes.

Egypt, who had Arsenal's Mohamed Elneny in their side, but were without the injured Mohamed Salah, equalised when Mostafa Mohamed converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

Egypt were reduced to 10 men when left-back Mohamed Hamdy was shown a second yellow card seven minutes into extra time.

With neither side able to score again, the match went to penalties and goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi converted the winning spot-kick to set up a meeting on Friday with Guinea who edged past 10-man Equatorial Guinea 1-0 earlier today.

The final of AFCON is on 10 February.
