Classic match: Everton 2-4 Man Utd

An acrobatic wonder goal from Alejandro Garnacho sent Manchester United on their way to a 3-0 win at Everton that took them into the top six.

In just the third minute, Diogo Dalot crossed from the right side, over the head of Garnacho, who produced an incredible bicycle kick into the top-right corner that evoked memories of Wayne Rooney’s iconic winner against Manchester City back in February 2011.

While Everton had a number of good chances to equalise and had a total of 24 shots compared with the visitors’ nine, a Marcus Rashford penalty and an Anthony Martial goal secured Man Utd’s fifth win in six league matches.

How the match unfolded

Garnacho gave Man Utd a dream start with his first goal of the season and United’s quickest in the Premier League since March 2021.

Everton pressed for an equaliser and after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s shot had forced a save from Andre Onana, Dwight McNeil was quickest to the rebound, but his effort was cleared off the line by Kobbie Mainoo, an 18-year-old midfielder making his first Premier League start for Man Utd.

Moments later, McNeil’s cross found Abdoulaye Doucoure, but the midfielder fired wide, while Calvert-Lewin headed over as Everton finished the first half in the ascendancy.

The Toffees were made to rue their missed chances as Man Utd were awarded a penalty early in the second half following a VAR review for a foul by former United player Ashley Young on Martial.

Bruno Fernandes handed the ball to Rashford, who emphatically fired his spot-kick into the top corner past England team-mate Jordan Pickford on 56 minutes for his first Premier League goal since September.

Martial added the third on 75 minutes as he latched on to a through-ball from Fernandes and coolly flicked his finish past Pickford for his ninth goal against Everton.

At the other end, Vitalii Mykolenko thought he had scored for the third successive match, but his powerful shot came back off the crossbar.

Man Utd move up to sixth with 24 points, just two points behind Tottenham Hotspur after their defeat to Aston Villa, while Everton are 19th with four points.

Did you know?

This was Everton’s sixth Premier League defeat by at least three goals in 2023, their most in a calendar year since 1994, when they lost seven.

Aged 38 years and 140 days, Ashley Young was the third-oldest outfielder to give away a penalty in the Premier  League, after Richard Gough, also for Everton v Liverpool in April 2001 (39 years 11 days) and Stuart Pearce, for West Ham v Everton in March 2001 (38y 341d).

Rashford has scored 11 of the 13 penalties he has taken for Man Utd (excluding shootouts), including each of his last eight in a row.

Martial scored his seventh Premier League goal against Everton, at least two more than he has against any other side.
