The combined 1.1million Fantasy Premier League managers who backed Son Heung-min (£9.7m) or Ollie Watkins (£8.5m) with the captain's armband will be feeling disappointed that they failed to outscore their more popular rivals.

Although Erling Haaland (£14.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) both returned in Manchester City's 1-1 draw with Liverpool in the opening fixture of Gameweek 13, the door was left open for a differential pick to profit.

But Tottenham Hotspur's 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa proved a frustrating watch, especially for Son's backers as the South Korean had THREE goals ruled out for offside. He finished the match with a paltry two points.

Watkins did at least find the back of the net, but a yellow card reduced his total to five points.

Bukayo Saka (£8.7m) was the top-scoring player among the leading captain choices, notching eight points in Arsenal's 1-0 victory at Brentford.

The midfielder provided a late assist for the winner scored by Kai Havertz (£7.1m) and picked up two bonus points as a result.

In the end, the 5m managers who gave Haaland the armband will be feeling reasonably content. Haaland's first-half strike, his 14th Premier League goal of the season, earned him a seven-point return.

Salah, meanwhile, provided an assist in the second half to delight his 1.5m backers. The Egyptian has now delivered an attacking return in each of his last seven outings against Man City, scoring seven goals and supplying four assists.

Who did the top managers captain?

Most of the top 100 managers will be feeling relieved that Son and Watkins didn't outscore Salah or Haaland.

Thirty-three opted to give the armband to Haaland, while 28 captained Liverpool's winger.

That number is far more than those who went in favour of Son or Watkins, with the former backed by 13 managers while the latter was selected by five.
